Rosé Wine 101 — What You Need To Know About This Popular Wine

We probably don’t need to tell you that rosé wine has become extremely popular over the past few years. Virtually nonexistent on restaurant menus and wine shelves a decade ago, it seems that you can’t go anywhere without seeing or hearing about this pink beverage of choice. A trend that some say was nurtured by celebrities and social media, rosé is clearly the wine of the times. Whether you enjoy drinking rosé regularly, or you’ve never really given it a try, we think much of what makes wine fun and interesting is knowing its story. What Kind of Wine is Rosé?

When people ask what kind of wine is in a particular bottle, the answer that follows usually describes the type of grape that is used to make the wine or the region in which the wine is produced. For instance, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Riesling are all grape varieties. When you hear the terms Bordeaux, Burgundy, or Champagne — those are all names for the region in which the wine was made. Keep in mind that there can be several different grapes varieties used in wines labeled for their region, but there are rules stating which ones are allowed and which aren’t. For instance, there are only six different grapes allowed in making a red Bordeaux. But we digress…

The question that many people want to know is, “What kind of grapes are used in making rosé wine”? The fact is, rosé wines don’t have the same rules and regulations as some other wines. The term “rosé” is simply used to describe the color of the wine. And, contrary to popular belief, the pink color of the wine doesn’t come from a hybrid pink grape. While there are multiple methods for making rosé wine, the finished wine color can be attributed to the skins of a red varietal of grape.            

In one of the most popular methods of making rosé, red grapes are crushed and left to sit in contact with their skins. The longer the juice remains in contact with the skins, the darker the wine color will be. It doesn’t take long — 24 hours tops — to produce the signature bright pink color, after which the skins are strained from the juice. 

Where is Rosé Made?

Rosé production isn’t limited to any one particular area — especially since any kind of grape can be used to make it. Great rosés are made in California, Italy, Spain, and Australia, just to name a few. However, the original and most popular location for the best rosés is in France. You’ll find French rosé to typically be lighter in color, and much drier than many of their counterparts.  

What Does Rosé Taste Like?

One of the reasons why rosé has become so popular is because of its light, refreshing flavor. Keep in mind that because rosé can be made with any type of grape, you’ll find a lot of variation from brand to brand. Like any wine, you can find a whole spectrum of colors, flavors, and intensities, but many rosés that you will taste will have bright, fruity, citrusy notes. Flavors commonly described are strawberry, grapefruit, rose petal, raspberry, melon, and even celery.   

What Type of Food Does Rosé Pair With?

Because of its light, fruity flavor rosé is known to pair well with just about anything. This makes it a favorite to bring to dinner parties and picnics — especially when you don’t know what’s being served, or you know that there will be a variety of foods being served. The fruit flavors in rosé pair well with meats and spicy foods. The tart, citrusy notes make it pair well with salads and fish. There are very few dishes that rosé doesn’t pair well with, so it’s a safe bet if you aren’t sure what to have.

How Should You Serve It?

We typically like to say that you should enjoy your wine however you like it. Some people prefer to have their wine chilled, while others prefer that it be closer to room temperature. In the case of rosé, it’s almost always chilled before drinking. This doesn’t mean that you should pull it out of your 40-degree refrigerator and start drinking. Even wines that are best served chilled should be somewhere between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit when you consume them. 

Why Do So Many People Like It?

Rosé wine is one of the most popular wines of the decade, and it’s easy to see why. For people who are looking for something that is easy to drink and pairs well with whatever is on their plate, it’s hard to find a more versatile wine than rosé. Because it’s widely available and fairly simple to make, it’s also often priced lower than other wines. And, for people who find the world of wine to be complicated and even intimidating, rosé is a great gateway into what could quite possibly be your favorite new hobby.
